The following are some common sports injuries with information on how we can help each one. The sooner you come to us with a problem, the better.

unning injuries

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITB syndrome)

  • Pain/ ache on the outside of the knee often at the middle or end of a run.
We use acupuncture and massage to help relax and stretch the ITB, usually with immediate results. Advice and stretches are given to prevent recurrence of this problem.

Runner’s Knee (Chondromalacia patellae)
  • Pain and or tenderness near or under the knee cap on the front or side of the knee. The pain may build up gradually and is usually only in one leg.
Acupuncture and simultaneous electrical stimulation produce very good results. We will also look at other factors which may be causing the problem.

Shin Splints (tibial stress syndrome)

  • A general term which refers to several different conditions. Pain on the inside, outside or on the shin bone.
A combination of acupuncture and massage, or electro-acupuncture is very beneficial. Advice regarding running gait, shoes and training routines helps to get to the root of the problem.


Plantar fasciitis
  • Pain on the sole of the foot, often at the front of the heel. Usually worse in the morning and aggravated by walking or running. A possible cause of heel and arch pain.
We use electro-acupuncture and give advice for this condition. We have had very good results. Some changes to footwear or training may need to be made .

Achilles tendonitis

  • Burning/ shooting/piercing pain on the back of the leg. Severe pain is often experienced on taking the first few steps in the morning and improves after moving around.
Acupuncture has proved very effective in this condition to speed healing, improve range of motion and decrease pain. We will look at the many possible causes of this problem and advise you how best to overcome it and also avoid recurrence.


Common climbing injuries

Climber's finger
  • Finger pain, bruising/ swelling, pain on flexion against resistance and stretching
Acupuncture helps with many different types of strain, speeding healing and resolution of the injury. Do not climb until you have had your appointment with us.

Golfer's/ Throwers Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
  • Ache/ pain on the inside of the elbow, pain on gripping or stretching, soreness may ease as you warm up, tender to touch the inside of the elbow
Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture have been shown to be very effective in reducing inflammation and pain. We will also look at your training to see if adjustments need to be made.

Shoulder Pain
  • There are a several different causes of shoulder pain in climbers.
We can help all of them. Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture will help speed healing and get you back climbing.


Common raquet sport injuries

Tennis Elbow (Lateral epicondylitis)
  • Pain and tenderness over the elbow and pain on resisted movement of the wrist, middle finger, or both, stiffness, limited range of movement, difficulty lifting or gripping objects.
This can be caused by many things, including playing tennis. Acupuncture reduces inflammation and pain. Combined with specific exercises you should be playing again very soon.

Wear and tear

Osteoarthritis

  • Pain and tenderness with mobilization and weight-bearing of the joint involved.
Although it is not possible to reverse this condition, it is possible to greatly reduce pain with acupuncture and herbal therapy. We have experience of treating this and rheumatoid arthritis with great success.
